Ghost in the Shell is one of the most well known cyberpunk media franchises ever produced. The franchise includes a large number of manga, anime, games, novels, and a live-action American-produced film. In order to help make sense of how all this media relates to one another, I constructed a continuity network map that tracks the source materials between and within different adaptations. I’ve also included more specific anime watch order tables if you want to know where to start with Ghost in the Shell.
The majority of these titles are already included in SHELLZINE’s Cyberpunk Media Index: LINK which you may wish to browse for individual title trailers, plot synopses and other details with more data than is included in this article. This article works more as a network diagram and order list to help understand where each title sits in terms of continuity and source inspiration.
Continuity Network Map
I have hosted the map in high resolution. I recommend opening it in a new tab, or saving it, and viewing the image at full zoom to see details more clearly.

Essentially, the original Shirow-created manga volumes are the source inspiration for the Oshii films, Stand Alone Complex, Arise, the new Science Saru TV series, and a PS1 game. However, we can see that significantly more titles were created within the Kamiyama’s Stand Alone Complex continuity which generated countless plot lines and character developments particular only to its one universe. This includes new manga made based on the Stand Alone Complex anime, light novels by Fujisaku and three games.
The much maligned 2017 live-action film took inspiration from the manga, Oshii’s films and Stand Alone Complex, which is depicted by the influence diagrams and arrows on the network map.
You’ll note some entries have no arrows between them, such as the PS2 and PSP game which exist independently within their continuity and have no “watch order”. Else, arrows within a continuity, for example Oshii’s films, the arrows lead from start to finish. Boxes with dotted borders within a continuity indicate a compilation or remake alternate.
While this looks complex, it means that each continuity is rather self-contained. You don’t need to have watched any of the other anime continuities or even have read the source manga to be able to start watching Science SARU’s new 2026 TV anime adaptation. Instead, each continuity gives you a different creator’s perspective of Shirow’s characters and themes.
Anime Continuity Watch Orders
In case the infographic is too daunting: I’ve broken down the watch orders for each continuity that was released in anime format. In the watch order columns, if a number has “A” behind it, this means it is an alternative to the original numbered entry above it. In most cases these alternative releases are condensed compilations, but sometimes they are re-releases with CGI or 3D effects.
Original Mamoru Oshii Films

The original 1995 film adaptation of the Manga by Mamoru Oshii remains my favourite Japanese anime. If you only watch or read one thing from this article, it would be Oshii’s original film, which in my opinion is superior to its source manga. It is a masterful film produced during Japan’s peak in the anime production industry with a high quality soundtrack, illustrations and universality to its script that is still poignant today. It should be considered isolated to the more episodic fandom-centric that followed in Stand Alone Complex and Arise. 2.0 was a poorly done cash-in and the original’s animations are far superior to the dated 3D rendering used to “re-master” the original film. Innocence is in all respects a poor facsimile of the original, but does have a few well-executed scenes for fans of the franchise.
| Watch order | Release | Title | Director | In-universe year | Plotline | Notes |

Kamiyama’s Stand Alone Complex Series

Without a doubt Kenji Kamiyama’s treatment of Ghost in the Shell has produced the most media and also fandom content. Over roughly 15 years, with a short break while Kazuchika Kise took the franchise reigns with Arise, Kamiyama orchestrated all manner of new adventures and character developments for Major Kusanagi, Batou and others. While it is inspired by Shirow’s original manga, a large majority of the creative work in Stand Alone Complex is the brainchild of Kamiyama and his team.

Kise’s Ghost in the Shell: Arise Continuity

Arise is set between 2027-2029, following a young Major Kusanagi and again, is inspired by the manga only. While it is billed as a “prequel” that is only in relation to the manga. It has no relationship with Stand Alone Complex or the Oshii films aside from using the same characters. Allegedly, the Arise series fared commercially poorly, prompting the franchise ownership to attempt and reboot the series within the Stand Alone Complex continuity with the SAC_2045 heavily 3D animated releases.
